Binaural Microphone Earbuds
As a hobbyist sound recordist, I wanted an easy and portable way to record high quality audio. This project is a binaural microphone system where the user physically wears the microphones inside their own ears to create stereo recordings. The prototype was a rough proof-of-concept modifying an old pair of earbuds, where the original internal speakers were removed and replaced with a pair of outward facing microphone capsules, which are then inserted into the ear to be recorded with a field recorder. The final version is a cleaner-looking modification of a pair of Apple Earbuds.
I like to capture soundscapes of the places I visit. Below is a demonstration of the binaural earbuds, captured in Tokyo.
